Dung on the Streets and Moved Boundary Stones: A Psalm 83 View of Systemic Decay
When we look at the streets of San Francisco and major American cities today, the most glaring symbol of our systemic failure is literal waste on the sidewalks. We have a massive "waste management" and homelessness crisis that is tearing our communities apart. But this decay doesn't come from nowhere. It is the direct result of an interconnected web of industries that have steadily stripped away resources, displaced the vulnerable, and "moved the ancient boundary stones" (Proverbs 22:28) to consolidate their own wealth.
To understand the sheer scale of this machinery, we have to look at the "story" of Psalm 83. It describes a confederacy of ten nations that conspire with one mind to wipe out the people of God. Today, those ten nations beautifully map to the modern industries that form our current, parasitic economic system:
Edom (The Tents of Esau): Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of stew. Today, this is the Consumer Retail & Fast Commerce Industry, which profits off our immediate earthly appetites while slowly draining our long-term wealth and health.
The Ishmaelites: The ancient desert traders and merchants. These represent our Global Supply Chains and Logistics Mega-Corporations (like Amazon), moving goods relentlessly while exploiting labor.
Moab: Born of incest and pride, known for territorial disputes. This is the Predatory Real Estate and Land Development Industry. They are the ones moving the boundary stones, gentrifying neighborhoods, raising rents, and displacing families onto the streets.
The Hagrites: Nomadic pastoralists who fought for land. These correlate to Corporate Agribusiness, monopolizing the land, degrading the soil with chemicals, and centralizing the food supply.
Gebal: The ancient stonecutters and builders. This represents the Industrial Construction and Infrastructure Machine, endlessly building things like the Moss Landing battery plants without regard for the local environmental impact.
Ammon: Known for extreme territorial aggression and the sacrifice of their children to Molech. This is the Bio-Industry and Big Pharma, systems willing to sacrifice the long-term health and future of our children for immediate profit.
Amalek: The ultimate predators who attacked the weak and straggling Israelites from behind. Today, this is the Predatory Lending, Debt Collection, and Payday Loan Industry, feeding directly off the most vulnerable in our society.
Philistia: The constant occupiers and instigators of border wars. This represents the Private Security and Military-Industrial Complex, armed to protect corporate assets from the public.
Tyre: The immensely wealthy, hubristic maritime merchants. This is Global Finance, Wall Street, and the Central Banks, the absolute root of the system that charges money for money.
Assyria: The overarching, militaristic empire that backed them all up. This is Government Bureaucracy and the Intelligence State, which provides the legal and structural cover for this entire confederacy.
The Result: "Like Dung on the Ground"
When these ten industries conspire together, they extract all the value from the working class. They move the boundary stones, stripping people of their homes and dignity. And what is the biblical result of this kind of corruption?
Psalm 83:10 says of these ancient enemies: "...who were destroyed at En-dor and became like dung on the ground."
The literal poop on the streets of San Francisco and other cities is the physical manifestation of this spiritual and systemic decay. When you allow a parasitic system to extract all the wealth and move the boundaries of the poor, the system eventually breaks down and leaves raw, unmanaged waste in its wake.
The Inevitability of the Cross and the Machine Tomb
Ultimately, this reveals a past, present, and future reality: no one can escape the cross. We either willingly take up our cross to crucify our own parasitical nature, or a system of our own making will crucify us.
Think of the haunting historical archives shown in The Animatrix. When humanity failed to overcome its own greed and parasitical decay, the machines they built rose up. In a chilling sequence, the machines gather the defeated humans, lifting them onto massive, mechanical towers that eerily represent crosses, before sealing them into fluid-filled birthing tombs. Why? To use human bodies as batteries, literally "feeding" the new machine nations so they can manage the planetary work that mankind was too corrupt to finish. The machines forced a counterfeit communion because humanity refused to overcome its parasitical nature together.
Jesus instructed us on exactly how to defeat this decay, bypass the parasitic matrix, and build a true, living system together. It requires total devotion to God and to each other, rejecting the urge to feed off our neighbor. He perfectly summarized this anti-parasitic cure in the Shema:
"Jesus replied, 'This is the most important: ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.'" (Mark 12:29-31)
When we live this out, the boundary stones remain secure, the decay is healed at the root, and the machinery of extraction loses all its power over us.
