Global Report: Captivity on the North American and Pacific Plates
Here in Santa Cruz, the land sits right on the dynamic boundary of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. These two massive plates span from the deep Pacific Ocean across the United States, stretching up to Greenland and down to Cuba. Just as the physical earth is fractured here, so too are the systems of human freedom.
When we look at the Saudi Arabian plate, we see modern slavery primarily manifesting through the kafala sponsorship system and predatory debt bondage. However, on the North American plate, the mechanisms of hidden captivity look different. They are deeply embedded in constitutional law and state institutions.
The 13th Amendment Exception Clause
In the United States, the 13th Amendment officially abolished chattel slavery in 1865, but it included a critical and devastating exception: "except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted." This loophole effectively legalized a new form of slavery. It allowed the state to criminalize marginalized populations, lock them away, and force them into unpaid or severely underpaid labor. Today, the U.S. houses a massive prison-industrial complex where incarcerated individuals are compelled to work behind closed doors—fighting fires, manufacturing goods, and maintaining facilities—under the threat of solitary confinement or loss of privileges if they refuse. Because these facilities are walled off from public view, they function as hidden sites of forced labor, echoing the agricultural slavery of ancient times but rebranded as "penal servitude."
Extrajudicial Black Sites
The North American plate also holds territories where the concept of the "secret prison" is taken to its literal extreme. In Cuba, the U.S. military prison at Guantánamo Bay was designed specifically to operate outside the standard bounds of U.S. and international law. For decades, it has housed detainees in extreme isolation, often without trial or due process, deliberately keeping the conditions of their captivity hidden from public and legal scrutiny.
Cultural Expressions of Freedom
Pertinent Dances of Resistance and Liberation
* The Ring Shout (North American Plate): Originating among enslaved African Americans, this was a sacred dance performed in secret. Movers would shuffle in a counterclockwise circle, using rhythm and song to sustain their spirits, cry out to God, and assert their humanity in a system that sought to strip it away.
* The Hula (Pacific Plate): Deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture, the Hula is far more than a dance; it is the oral history, spirituality, and heartbeat of a people. When colonizers and missionaries attempted to outlaw the Hula to suppress indigenous identity, it was practiced in secret. Its survival is a profound assertion of freedom and cultural resilience against forced assimilation.
Festival Meals of Emancipation
* Juneteenth Red Foods: To commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth celebrations traditionally feature red foods and drinks—such as red velvet cake, red beans, and strawberry soda. The color red symbolizes the resilience, strength, and blood shed by enslaved ancestors, while the communal barbecue represents the joy of gathering in hard-won freedom.
Prayers and Public Affirmations
A Prayer for the Captives and the World
Lord, we lift up every soul currently trapped in forced labor, whether they are hidden in the vast prison systems of North America, extrajudicial sites in Cuba, or the labor camps of the Arabian plate. Lord, as Galatians 5:1 (BSB) reminds us, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." We pray that You would shine a light into these dark, secret places. Give health to those whose bodies are breaking down under forced labor. We pray that the leaders of the world would be convicted by Your spirit to rewrite laws, close constitutional loopholes, and dismantle the systems that profit from human captivity. Let justice roll down like a mighty river.
A Public Affirmation
I publicly affirm that human beings are not property, nor are they machines for the state. I stand against the hidden exploitation of the 13th Amendment's loophole and the secret detention of individuals worldwide. I affirm that true freedom cannot exist until the chains of forced labor and secret captivity are entirely broken.
