Global Report: Hidden Captivity on the Arabian Tectonic Plate
Across the region resting on the Arabian tectonic plate—spanning Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, and parts of Iran—millions of people are trapped in secret conditions of modern slavery. They are often held captive not behind traditional iron bars, but by systemic debt, political marginalization, and exploitative legal frameworks that render them completely invisible to the outside world.
The Kafala System and Debt Bondage in the Gulf
In many Gulf nations, the kafala (sponsorship) system serves as a legal trap for migrant workers. People arriving from poorer regions are often forced to pay exorbitant, illegal recruitment fees, plunging them into severe debt before they even begin working. Once they arrive, their legal immigration status is completely tied to their employer.
Because employers frequently confiscate passports and withhold wages, these workers are unable to leave, change jobs, or return home. They become trapped in debt bondage, functioning as modern-day slaves. Many are hidden away in isolated labor camps or trapped behind the closed doors of domestic servitude, making it nearly impossible for inspectors or human rights advocates to find them or assess their living conditions.
Economic and Political Captivity in Iran
In Iran, worsening economic conditions and political marginalization have driven vulnerable populations—especially disenfranchised ethnic minorities—into desperate situations. Without access to legitimate credit or government protection, many individuals are forced to take predatory loans from unregulated money-brokers, factory owners, or local authority figures. To pay off these insurmountable debts, entire families are forced into grueling labor. Because these arrangements happen in the shadows of the informal economy, the victims are essentially kept as secret prisoners of their own debt, hidden from international oversight.
In both of these scenarios, the victims are swallowed by systems designed to exploit them while keeping their suffering a complete secret from the rest of the world.
